Homosassa
Drippy humid hot weather has dominated the scene this week in Florida and the best way to "beat the heat" has been to get in the water and scallop. North or south of the Homosassa channel around Marker #4 has plenty of scallops. Look for the turtle grass and you will find scallops. The thick grass is the hardest to find the scallops in but if you look for a meadow, a place were the grass is sparse and thin that's were the most scallops will be. Most folks after a day of scalloping can be found at the head waters of either Crystal River or the Homosassa River in the very refreshing 72 degree spring water.
On the fishing side of things the consensus is that the fishing has been tough. I believe that the week after a full moon and extreme water temps has something to do with it. I will tell you though were I did have the best luck this week. For trout I used a D.O.A. large oval cork with a D.O.A. holographic rootbeer shrimp out near the Bird Rack to catch some nice sized trout. The bottom that I would target would be the yellow broken patches. It would consist of sand holes and hard reef patches. Further offshore west of the Foul Area in about 10' of water local guides have been having some luck dragging Gulp! shrimp behind there drift.
Redfish have been just a tough for me and I am having to "run and gun " to many different spots to scrap up a limit of redfish. The best bait in clear water has been live shrimp and further into the backcountry use a Eppinger Rex Spoon , MirrOlure Top Dog and MirrOlures LiL John.
Tarpon are in the local rivers and for some big excitement, fish very early morning or late evening with a Bomber Long A , MirrOlures Catch 2000 or D.O.A.'s Big Fish Lure in mullet. High incoming tide will be mid-morning this weekend. Capt. William Toney www.homosassainshorefishing.com

I am a fourth generation full time guide based out of Homosassa, Fla. Our family has made a living on the water before the 1900's. My bread and butter so to speak is trout and redfish but I do chase shallow water grouper, tarpon and many other inshore species of fish. I also offer cooked shorelunches on a private island and scalloping trips in season. My boat is a custom built Tremblay powered by Mercury Outboards. I am vice president of the Homosassa Guides Association, a associate member of Florida Outdoor Writers Association and host of Nature Coast Outdoors T.V. program on WYKE, BrightHouse channel 16 ( www.naturecoastoutdoors.net ). Fishing is my passion and I love to provide my clients with the best day possible on the water, with the best equipment and good old fashion service
He specializes in Red Fish, Trout, and Tarpon, to just name a few. His boat is a custom built 23' Tremblay Flats Boat powered by Mercury Outboards.
