Well here we are middle of July and after this frigid winter I’m not going to comment on the heat. The fishing is hot though. We are getting reports of plenty of trout, silver and speckled in the deeper grass flats with a mix of Spanish mackerel as well up to five pounds. These fish are being taken on white bait and chumming them seems to be the key.
The tarpon bite is still in full swing here on the bay and the out going tide seems to be best for the silver kings. These fish will take pinfish, threadfins, pinfish or crabs. We are also hearing that there are still plenty of redfish all over the bay. A few of my friends, Al Fuller, Wayne Carter, and Doug Butler and caught a limit of upper slot reds on shrimp in a matter of about 45 minutes in one of Al’s secret spots. Talk about getting your fix quick.
The snapper, larger ones still haven’t moved into the bay I fear that we lost quite a few inside this winter. Doug of T.A. Mahoney’s was telling me that he scooped up hundreds this winter that were caught in the cold. That being said the off-shore bite is STUPID. There are mango, yellowtail, grouper, and red snapper all over. Remember if you’re wanting American Reds you better do as soon as we are coming to the end of the season. Chumming the snapper is a must but don’t over do it or they’ll get full and stop. As a side bar remember to drink plenty of water as it is hot don’t turn a great day on the water into a bad rest of your life
